Cleaning with Vinegar?!?! YUP!

In the current climate we are in right now with health being at the forefront of our minds, having to clean more and people hoarding the cleaning products has my heart hopeful for a teaching moment. We have the ability to make a change for the better with our cleaning products.

Most conventional cleaning products are very toxic. There, I said it. The Toxic Substance Control Act is an act that was passed by Congress in 1976 and grandfathered in over 60,000 chemicals being sold in markets making and not updating that since 1976 means the industry is unregulated. Its really crazy that around half of the chemicals on the market today have yet to be tested for safety at all. Another section of this act protects the manufacturers from having to share their ingredients calling them “trade secrets.” This really doesn’t sit well with me and I urge you to check into the ingredients on the back of the bottles in your home. I personally look up the side effects for each or plug into EWG – a database for the safety of personal care products that are rated by 1-10 for our health and safety. I also think it’s really crazy how in a year where everyone is taking a massive hit, the cleaning industry has grossed over $30 million dollars? There are people who are worried about affording and/or finding cleaning supplies, so I have a solution…

How often do you think about white vinegar? 🤷🏼‍♀️ often? Jk. Probably none. Let me tell y’all the best secret… you can use it for EVERYTHING. Surprisingly, vinegar is also the perfect natural cleaner and when you combine it with other substances it makes the cleaning power even more effective. You will also save a ton of money on cleaning products by cleaning with vinegar in your house and *fun fact* it’s in stock mostly everywhere! Vinegar is safe to substitute in daily cleaners and is perfect for anyone wanting to have a more non-toxic home. It is extremely mild In comparison to other main stream cleaners in your home. It is even safe for cleaning in the homes of children and pets. I actually use this to clean my home for several years when I was on a very strict budget because of how cheap it is to make large batches of cleaner.

Vinegar is multi purposeful, anti bacterial, anti microbial, here are just a few of the ways I use it in my household:

🧽 veggie soak

🧽 glass cleaner

🧽 ant repellent

🧽 treats stains

🧽 Odor remover

🧽 kills mold

🧽 hair rinse to remove build up

🧽 after sun soak

🧽 helps with dandruff

🧽 kills weeds

if you’re like me and especially my husband, you don’t love the smell of vinegar. Check out this recipe for a homemade cleaner that uses citrus, essential oils and or herbs to make your own DIY nontoxic vinegar cleaner. Add to a spray bottle and you’re ready to go!

You’ll need:

-citrus peels (orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime)

-herbs (rosemary, sage, mint)

-white vinegar

There are so many good things to say about vinegar dispute how stinky it can be. I love that you can clean pretty much anything with it, its nontoxic, cheap and not scarce like many other cleaners. From polishing stainless steel to cleaning toilet bowls, it does it all. It’s a super simple switch you can make with non toxic cleaning without breaking the bank.

PSA: it is never a good idea to mix vinegar with bleach, that can cause you to get extremely sick. You also never want to use white distilled vinegar on stone surfaces like granite or marble because the acid can damage the surface.
