My Must Have For Zits!

Have you ever used charcoal in your skincare? It has become my favorite multipurpose product in my nontoxic journey for a multitude of reasons! My skin is acne prone so charcoal really works wonders with my break outs.

Story time: If you go into a hospital, you’ll see charcoal being used to treat overdoses. The black powder in activated charcoal stops toxins from being absorbed in the stomach by binding to them. The body is unable to absorb charcoal, and so the toxins that bind to the charcoal leave the body in the feces. I shared that story to explain that it has a similar effect when used on the skin, it allows the pores to “detox” and get rid of the yuck.

The first charcoal skincare products that I’ve tested and use consistently are the Beautycounter charcoal bar and mask. I have oily and acne prone skin so these two products have been a lifesaver for my skin. I have always used skincare regimens that hid the issues I have with my skin verses fix them. Thanks to charcoal, my skin naturally purges that yucky stuff that’s been hiding deep in my pores and wahhh-la, clear skin!

When I use these two products, it goes a little something like this. The charcoal bar is a “cleanser” that I wash my face with 2x daily. I keep it beside my sink in a soap dish with ridges so it is never sitting directly in water. Don’t skip this step if you’re using a charcoal bar, it helps my bar last about six months. The bar is ideal for oily or blemish-prone skin specifically.

It is a detoxifying cleansing bar that absorbs impurities in your skin without drying it out, resulting in a clearer, smoother, and brighter-looking complexion. It’s made with purifying Japanese binchotan charcoal, antioxidant-rich organic green tea, and hydrating organic coconut oil, creating a gentle formula that can be used daily on your face and body. I also use it to clean my makeup brushes once a week. By cleaning my brushes, it allows them to absorb product better and reduce the amount of bacteria being transferred from place to place.

This “season” of my life isn’t being very forgiving on my body so I knew I needed to invest a little in my skin. I make sure to use a charcoal mask 2x times a week to target specific problem areas on my face and neck. A face mask is the perfect way to give yourself a little “spa treatment” from home and help your skin. I also use it as a spot treatment for random zits that occur. By treating with the Balancing Charcoal Facial Mask, it helps absorb excess oil and draws out impurities with activated charcoal.

Right now is a great time to give your skin a little extra TLC, a face mask is the perfect addition to your skincare routine. It’s an “emergency item” in my book, and I wouldn’t want to NOT have it for just in case. For those of you that want to transition to a cleaner deodorant, adding in a charcoal mask under your arms to detox your pits wouldn’t be a bad idea either!
