Why Do I Not “Buy” As Much Clothing As I Used Too

Back in March 2020, I started getting a monthly Rent the Runway subscription. Rent the Runway is premier designer rental destination that allows you to rent high fashion on trend items, wear them, and swap them for new ones when you’re ready.

I was going on a work trip and needed a few pieces that I knew I wouldn’t wear again and one of my friends suggested it. The Rent the Runway app is extremely easy to navigate and allowed me to find the clothing for my trip and so much more. I loved it so much that I decided to continue to rent new pieces instead of splurging on fast fashion. 

The fashion industry is the 3rd most polluted industry in the entire world.

Let me share a few facts with you:

In the USA alone, more than 10.5 million tons of clothing are sent to landfills every single year. 

Extending the life of clothing an extra 9 months reduces that item’s carbon, waste and water footprint by 20%. 

Under 1% of the material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing at the end of its life. 

Knowing this, I do my best to not “buy, buy, buy” all the time (which is why I don’t link as much as most bloggers) but made me even more happy with my decision to Rent the Runway and rent my clothing. Yes I still buy a few things but I make sure they are staple pieces of my wardrobe that I will wear over and over before thrifting or gifting. 

2020 made most of us do a lot more shopping than we’ve ever done before because we were all stuck at home. I know that I had to focus REALLY hard on not emotional shopping and I still did it several times…. I tend to lean into shopping to fill an emotional need I’m not getting in my personal life. I’ve really looked long and hard at this issue and it’s something that’s been apart of my life for as long as I can remember. Breaking those chains and trying something different like Rent the Runway helped me gain back control over that aspect of my life AND do better for my planet.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
