Health

If I wanted to upgrade my health in a major way, here’s what I would focus on…

As a mom of seven, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to navigate the sea of information on living a healthier lifestyle. Over the past 13 years, I’ve been on a journey toward a more holistic and balanced life, and I’ve learned that sometimes, simplicity is key. If I had to start over and focus on just a few core habits, here’s what I would do:

1. Read My Bible Every Day

One of the most grounding practices in my life is spending time in the Word each day. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, but starting the day with scripture helps center my mind, renew my spirit, and set the tone for the rest of the day. This practice keeps me focused on what truly matters and provides a strong foundation for everything else.

2. Go to Bed Before 10 PM

Prioritizing sleep is non-negotiable. As moms, we often burn the candle at both ends, but getting to bed by 10 PM allows our bodies to get the rest they need for optimal function. Consistent, quality sleep improves mood, boosts immune function, and gives me the energy to tackle the demands of the day.

3. Get Morning Sunlight for 10-30 Minutes Without Contacts or Glasses

Our bodies thrive on natural light, especially in the morning. Getting outside for just 10-30 minutes of sunlight without any barriers like contacts or glasses helps regulate my circadian rhythm, which in turn supports better sleep, mood, and overall health. It’s a simple, yet powerful way to start the day.

4. Put My Bare Feet in the Grass for 30 Minutes a Day

There’s something incredibly grounding about connecting directly with the earth. Walking barefoot on the grass for at least 30 minutes each day, also known as “earthing,” helps reduce stress, improve sleep, and boost overall well-being. It’s one of those practices that feels like a small luxury in a busy day.

5. Focus on Deeper and More Controlled Breathing

Breathing is something we do automatically, but how often do we think about the quality of our breath? Taking time throughout the day to focus on deeper, more controlled breathing can have profound effects on stress levels, mental clarity, and even digestion. It’s a small shift that can lead to big changes.

6. Move and Get 10,000 Steps Per Day

Movement is medicine. Aiming for 10,000 steps a day keeps my body active and my mind clear. Adding a short walk in nature enhances this practice even more, providing mental and emotional benefits that complement the physical exercise. It’s a simple way to ensure I’m staying active, even on the busiest days.

7. Lift Weights 3-4 Times a Week

Strength training is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and overall vitality, especially as we age. Lifting weights 3-4 times a week not only helps build physical strength but also boosts metabolism, improves posture, and enhances mood. It’s a practice that has been a game-changer in my wellness routine.

8. Eat Less Processed Meals and Snacks

Food is fuel, and what we put into our bodies matters. Focusing on whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible is a cornerstone of healthy living. By reducing processed meals and snacks, I’m able to nourish my body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally. It’s about making small, mindful choices that add up over time.

9. Drink Filtered Water with Sea Salt and Lemon Juice

Hydration is key, but it’s not just about drinking water. Adding a pinch of sea salt and a squeeze of lemon juice to filtered water helps replenish essential minerals and electrolytes, supporting hydration at a deeper level. This simple addition to my daily routine has made a noticeable difference in my energy and overall wellness.

Living a healthier, more holistic lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on these fundamental practices, I’m able to keep things simple yet effective. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the options out there, start with these basics—they’re the foundation of a well-rounded, healthy life. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection, and every small step counts.
