I Don’t Drink Alcohol Anymore. Here’s Why & What I Sip Instead
The Honest Truth? I used to think an occasional drink was harmless. A glass of wine to unwind or a cocktail at dinner felt like part of being an adult. But as I got older, had babies, started healing my hormones, and became more aware of what I was putting in and on my body, something shifted. Alcohol no longer felt like self-care. It started to feel like self-sabotage. So I stopped drinking. And I’ve never looked back.
Why Alcohol Hits Harder Now (Especially for Women) You may have noticed that your body doesn’t bounce back like it used to after a night out. There’s a reason for that—and it’s not just “getting older.”
- Hormones: Women metabolize alcohol differently than men. We naturally have less of the enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) that breaks down alcohol in the liver. That means more alcohol enters our bloodstream, and it stays there longer.
- Cycle Shifts: Depending on where you are in your cycle, alcohol can hit harder, affect mood more dramatically, and even worsen PMS symptoms.
- Postpartum and Perimenopause: These hormonal windows make our bodies more sensitive to inflammatory triggers and that is including alcohol.
- Sleep Disruption: Even one drink can disrupt REM sleep and suppress melatonin production, making you feel more exhausted, not relaxed.
The Research Speaks: Alcohol Is a Class 1 Carcinogen Let’s talk science and not shame.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen… the same category as tobacco and asbestos.
- A 2023 meta-analysis published in The Lancet Public Health linked even light drinking to an increased risk of breast cancer in women.
- Alcohol can negatively impact gut health, liver function, blood sugar regulation, and mental health these are all areas that are foundational to women’s hormone balance.
- A report from the American Institute for Cancer Research found that just one drink a day increases breast cancer risk by 5–9%.
This isn’t fear-based. It’s fact-based. And I believe when we’re informed, we can make better decisions—especially as moms, wives, and women of faith stewarding the bodies God gave us.
The Rise of Functional Beverages: A Healthier Way to Unwind There’s a reason the functional beverage industry is booming.
- Gen Z and Millennials are drinking less alcohol than previous generations, opting for drinks that support mood, digestion, energy, and focus.
- The market is expected to reach $279 billion by 2032, according to Grand View Research.
- Functional beverages combine botanicals, adaptogens, vitamins, minerals, and natural nootropics to support your health without the crash, hangover, or regret.

Giving up alcohol doesn’t mean giving up joy. It means trading short-term stress relief for long-term health and clarity. It means being present for your babies, waking up with energy, and saying yes to the version of you that feels aligned and well.
I’m not here to judge anyone’s journey. I’m here to remind you that if alcohol doesn’t feel right anymore, you’re not alone. There are beautiful alternatives that support your nervous system, your hormones, and your peace.
