How I’m Transitioning to a Clean Wardrobe (And Why It Matters)

This is something I’m only just now tackling in my non-toxic lifestyle and I’ve been on this journey for 13 years.

Clean food, clean beauty, clean air, clean water… but my clothing? It hadn’t clicked for me until recently that what we wear daily is just as important.

I used to think: “Well I eat organic and use safe products… isn’t that enough?” But the truth is, your skin is your largest organ and it’s absorbing what you’re putting on it all day long.

And most modern clothes are made of plastic.

What Is Polyester (and Why Should We Care)?

Let’s break it down.
Polyester is a synthetic fiber made from petroleum-derived plastic. It’s the same base as plastic water bottles. And when it’s heated up (hello, dryer), it releases endocrine-disrupting chemicals like antimony and phthalates.

These chemicals can:

  • Disrupt hormone function
  • Contribute to skin irritation, rashes, and even fertility challenges
  • Shed microplastics that pollute the water and land with every wash

And it’s not just polyester. Rayon, nylon, acrylic… these are all synthetic fabrics that do not breathe, trap heat, and often contain chemical dyes and finishes that can be absorbed by the skin.

Why Natural Fabrics Matter

Fabrics made from nature (like organic cotton, flax linen, and hemp), are breathable, gentle on the skin, and free from plastic-based chemicals. They:

  • Allow your skin to regulate temperature
  • Are less likely to cause irritation
  • Reduce toxic exposure for sensitive areas (especially underwear + sleepwear)
  • Are biodegradable and more sustainable

“But Isn’t That Expensive?”

Let me say this clearly:
I am not suggesting you throw out your entire wardrobe and replace it overnight.
That’s not sustainable financially or mentally.

Here’s how I’ve made it work:

  • Thrifting: I’ve found 100% linen, cotton, and even hemp pieces secondhand at amazing prices. Check tags and feel for breathability.
  • Shop slow + intentionally: I wait for major sales from brands I trust.
  • Build a capsule wardrobe: I stick to my color palette so everything mixes and matches. No more impulse shopping!
  • Use what you have: You can transition one category at a time (like sleepwear, underwear, or summer pieces first).
