I’ve had a few mamas ask me “what’s in my diaper bag,” and my first answer is always this: “I don’t carry a diaper bag.” I have a diaper bag that my mom gave me at my baby shower, and I used it until Nolan was about 6 months old. I despised that diaper bag and so did Derrek. One day he told me he had to buy himself a cool backpack to use when he had Nolan, and it helped me realize what I could have been using the entire time! A large tote bag or backpack is perfect to carry your day to day stuff, and you don’t have a huge brightly colored bag overflowing with junk you won’t even use. I go back and forth between the bags I use… I really like this tribal inspired backpack I found at Target a few years ago; it hangs on the stroller perfectly and matches everything! When I want something a little nicer, I use my vegan caramel leather tote from the Pink Monogram.
I try and keep an assortment of essentials with me at all times. I’ve learned what items are handy when you’re out and about with two little ones and what items to keep in the car so they don’t overwhelm my bag. I bought a little wooden bin and I keep it in the car with a few toys, books, snacks, a change of clothes for each kid, diapers, and a pack of wipes. It’s easier to keep all that stuff in the car versus carrying it around because wherever we go, I can always walk to the car to get something when or if we need it.
What’s in my purse:
1. wallet* –
I found this clasp wallet at Target a few years ago and fell in love the bright print. It holds my important cards and cash and keeps things from falling out! This wallet has held up surprisingly well for a Target wallet! They have a huge selection, so next time you go, check them out. I personally like it because if I ever needed to, I could just take it with me on a date night or event. *I’ve linked my new favorite printed wallet at Target.
2. cell phone –
I mean… it’s my entire business. I can do everything on it except make jewelry, so I have my phone on me pretty much all the time. I also use my phone to snap quick pictures of Harper and Nolan. They are at such a fun age that I really like documenting them so one day we can look at their pictures and videos.
3. ring sling –
I keep a ring sling in my bag because I know at some point when we are out, Harper will get tired, and she is easier to carry around in a sling than in my arms. I roll it up and tuck it into itself and store it in the bottom of my bag until I need it. The kids have even used it as a blanket when we forgot theirs before. I cannot say it enough, but babywearing is such a great experience for you and your child. They are getting their needs met, and you can use both of your hands!
4. makeup essentials –
When I was in high school, one of my sisters lived in Paris, France. She sent me this dark magenta leather pouch and I’ve used it since. It keeps my makeup essentials together. I always keep a Chapstick for the kids and Derrek, lip gloss, eye liner, powder and tweezers. It’s easy for me to make touch-ups with these products, and they don’t take up much room.
5. essential oils –
I try and stay as prepared as possible while packing as lightly as I can. I always keep a handful of essential oils with me that will be helpful in situations while I am away from home. Lemon is great to have because if you get a scrape or a cut, you can apply lemon oil and it will help bring the infection to the surface and heal it. It’s also a great oil to clear smells in the air, so sometimes I’ll difuse it in the car, especially after a dirty diaper has been changed. Lavender is my next go-to when we are out and about. It can be used so many different ways for different aliments. Lavender is great for stress and anxiety, headaches, combating muscle pain, sunburn care, fevers and so much more. On long road trips, I’ll add this to my diffuser in the car to calm the kids during the ride. Theives is a “miracle blend” of purifying oils that can combat any ailments. You can use it for a sore throat, headache, germs and colds, disinfecting, cleaning laundry and so much more. I always spray us down with Thieves spray (Thieves oil and water) before trips to the grocery store or any over-populated places. The last oil that I make sure is with me is my Stress Away blend. I use it like a perfume every single day. It helps combat anxiety, stress, worry, tension.. pretty much every emotion I feel during any given day. I stopped using perfumes a few years ago and thanks to oils, I haven’t looked back!
6. planner –
With everything that goes on between our business, blog, babies, families etc… i have to stay extremely organized. My planner is my lifesaver. I write down grocery lists, blog post ideas, events, bills, holidays, etc. Everytime I try and steer away from my planner, I always get thrown back into it because my life simply doesn’t work on a whim. I have to plan for everything in order to not forget everything. I feel with the more kids I have, the easier it is to forget everything!
7. water bottle –
it’s really important to stay hydrated. Post-pregnancy I found that it’s so easy to forget to drink water, I would find myself not stopping long enough to drink 8 oz all day. Breastmilk is primarily water, so drinking enough is crucial if you want your experience to work out! Drinking water isn’t just important for breastfeeding moms, but everyone in general. Drinking enough water flushes out all the junk in your body and can even help clear your skin and revive it to a healthy pink tint.
8. sunglasses –
Any time I am out in the sun, I try to wear my sunglasses. The bright light makes my eyes pour water, so I try and keep a good pair of sunnies close by to grab when I need them. These all black sunglasses from Nectar have been my go-to for the past month or so. They go with everything and they are so light weight. I keep them in their little bag so they don’t get scratched when I am out and about.
