My Spring Skin Must Haves

Hey ya’ll! I am so sorry that I didn’t post this yesterday but any week that I travel always throws me off and I am gearing up to head to Arizona for a few days with the leaders of Beautycounter. This is a huge trip for me because I have so many wonderful women that I get to see and catch up and anytime I get to head to a Beautycounter event makes me giddy. With this being said, I am prepping for higher temps (it’s going to be in the upper 80s) and even though a cold front blew threw South Carolina. With warmer weather brings the changing of skincare needs. Your skin changes during different seasons and this time is really important for protection and making you G L O W.

When the weather is nice, you can catch myself and the kids outside 24/7. We normally come in when the mosquitos get so back that we can’t stand it. It’s also important to know exactly what you need to protect yourself from the moment you step outside. An effective sunscreen must have a Broad Spectrum claim. Broad Spectrum is the statement that ensures defense against UVA, aging rays and UVB, burning rays. UVB are the rays that lead to sunburn. On average, five sunburns at any age doubles one’s risk for melanoma. UVA = Aging sun rays. While UVA is almost undetectable because these rays do not change the color of the skin, they do penetrate deeper into the dermis of the skin, where they cause free-radical damage that leads to skin aging. UVA rays are equally intense no matter the season, AND they penetrate clouds and glass. Now, I’m going to share one that most people have never even heard of. Blue light. One ray that is becoming top of mind as we spend more and more time in front of computers, smart phones and tablets is Blue Light. Blue Light is a trendy topic in the technology realm, but, Blue Light is actually everywhere. When outside, light from the sun travels through the atmosphere. The shorter, high energy blue wavelengths that make up Blue Light, collide with the air molecules, causing blue light to scatter. This is in fact what makes the sky look blue. Its skin-aging effects can potentially be as much of a concern as those caused by UVA & UVB. The latest research suggests it may damage skin proteins and lipids. When these are damaged, signs of age like loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation are possible.

For this reason, I always coat myself and the kids with the Beautycounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen when we head outside. I even take it a step farther and rub the Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 on my face, neck and chest. Throughout my life, I’ve burned more times than I can count and caused years and years of sun damage. Now that I have kids, I want to do better for myself and them. I want to be here for as long as possible so I care skincare very seriously. I also don’t want to age more than I already have so working on preventing that is at the top of my list.

In addition to the products that we use outdoors, I have found a few other favorites that are constantly on rotation this time of year. I love using the Beautycounter Brightening facial oil because it really revives my dull skin and gives me that bright glowing face that this tired mama so desperately needs. It’s also wonderful to use after being outdoors because it helps fight sunspots and melasma. The Brightening Oil features vitamin C and is best for those concerned with dull, uneven skin. It brightens and revitalizes skin while it nourishes and provides lasting moisture.

When I don’t have time (or let’s be real, am to lazy to apply) for sunless tanner, I fake it with the Beautycounter Glow Shimmer Oil. This body oil always leaves my skin looking looking silky-smooth and glowing! It absorbs easily and has a faint scent that smells amazing. The Glow Shimmer Oil is formulated with nourishing botanicals and essential oils rather than synthetic fillers and fragrances, which have been linked to allergies and hormone disruption. I also like to mix it with a pump of the Countermatch Body Lotion for that perfect lotion/oil ratio. A few key ingredients are worth noting:
-Apricot Kernel Oil: easily absorbs to soothe, hydrate, and soften skin without a greasy residue.
-Sweet Almond Oil: boosts hydration and smooths dull skin.
-Organic Grapeseed Oil: has natural calming properties and is especially good for sensitive skin.
