Finally, the post y’all have all been waiting for! I get asked so many questions about our family bed that it just made perfect sense to deconstruct everything and explain it in detail on my blog. Before we made our family bed, we slept in a king sized bed. When Nolan came along it still worked for us but then there were those random times that he would fall off the bed. After Harper came into our world, we were so crowded. We cosleep because that’s what works best for our family. The kids rooms are upstairs and I didn’t want them to try and come downstairs or get scared in the middle of the night and fall or end up lost. Nor do I want to travel up there at 3am. My SIL shares a similar lifestyle to us and told us how much they loved their family bed so we decided to try it for ourselves. Derrek built a frame big enough to fit a queen and a king mattress and keep them together without a huge hole forming in between them. We just went to our local Lowe’s store for the supplies, told them what we were doing and they led us in the right direction.
On our journey to a healthier lifestyle, we decided we wanted to use organic mattresses in our home. The reason why this is because manufacturers are dousing mattresses with highly toxic flame-retardant chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ether, better known as PBDE, which do NOT have to be disclosed in any way.
PBDEs, which have been banned in Canada, Europe, and several states, build up in your body over time, and what you absorb or inhale does not go away. This is concerning not only because of the health problems PBDE is associated with (brain and reproductive damage, decreased sperm quality, thyroid problems and even cancer at high levels), but also because of how pervasive these chemicals have become.
Having this information, let us with no choice but to do better! After researching different organic mattress companies, we decided to go with Naturepedic. They handcraft organic mattresses for the entire family! I love this quote from their website “We believe that natural materials are at the core of superior comfort and support. Mother Nature provides us with the best unrivaled materials that are actually in harmony with our bodies. Would you rather sleep on a pile of chemicals (literally) or be surrounded by the finest organic materials Mother Nature has to offer? Would your immune system rather be fighting foreign chemicals while you sleep or healing itself instead?” this really resonated with us and was the ultimate reason why we chose to use their products in our home. Their mattresses are made with organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex and organic cotton incased coils. When our mattresses came they arrived in several boxes with step by step instructions on how to assemble. The entire process took less than an hour and then the kids took it upon themselves to test them out. We love how you can customize both sides of the mattress. Derrek likes extra firm and I went with extra plush! We are so happy with our decision to change out our mattresses and only use Naturepedic. It’s such a relieving feeling knowing that we are doing what’s best for ourselves and our family. The mattresses that we chose for our family bed are from the Luxury Organic Mattress Series. I received these products in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Read my disclaimer page for more information.
Now, I’m going to finally answer all the questions y’all ask about our bed.
Do the kids sleep on one side and your husband and you on the other?
for the most part, Harper and Nolan will sleep together on the queen size mattress on the right side of our family bed. Sometimes they venture back over to our side and snuggle and that’s ok. I hold Scarlet Reese in my arms while I sleep and I normally snuggle up to Derrek.
Do the kids have their own rooms as well? If so, do they spend much time in them?
yes! They each have their own rooms and they love them. I try and go upstairs with them to their rooms once a day. They go up there together and play a lot with their toys up there. Sometimes Nolan asks to sleep in his room and he is always welcome to do that. we don’t push him too or push him not too.
Where did you find a comforter and sheets to fit?
I searched for organic sheets and comforters and found ours from Ettitude online. Each mattress has a fitted sheet then we sleep with a comforter on each of them. We don’t use top sheets because we just don’t like them. I just found out that Naturepedic makes sheets so I have ordered theirs to try as well!
How big is our bed?
its a king and a queen put together. It takes up the entire length of our bedroom so it’s wall to wall!
How did you smooth out where the two mattresses meet?
its really not noticeable where they meet because the bed frame that Derrek built pushes them together. If you have two different heights of your bed just add wood underneath and level them out.
How do you get all the kids down for naps?
we have a routine that we’ve had since Nolan was an infant. When it’s time to take a nap, the bedroom door is closed, our box fan is turned on for noise and the curtains are closed. It might take a little bit for everyone to fall asleep but once they do I slip out and get work done and normally work out. At night, I come in the bedroom with Nolan and Harper and they fall asleep while I watch something that’s really boring to them on tv (haha). Scarlet Reese is either nursing or Derrek has her while I get the older two to sleep.
Does your little one wake up the other two with her nightly feedings?
no she doesn’t. When she was an infant I would get up and go into the living room to change her and burp her. Now, I sleep on my side with her in my arms and she nurses on one side and falls asleep. When she wakes up, I just roll over and let her nurse on the other side and she stays asleep.
