With the flu running wild in America this year, I thought I’d share a little more about how we have treated the flu holistically. My family and I have lived a non toxic lifestyle for almost 6.5 years now and I’ve researched and learned a lot through out that course. I am not a doctor so please don’t think that but I have done well more than my fair share of research and also my husband is a doctor of chiropractic so between him and myself, are very confident in our decisions when it comes to treating our family holistically.
First and foremost, we believe that the body functions best when the spine is in proper alignment so chiropractic adjustments play a big part in our health. Most of the benefits associated with chiropractic care are due to patients receiving specific chiropractic adjustments. chiropractic adjustments work by helping to place your body in the proper position that then allows the body to heal itself. Safety is paramount. Indeed, as a holistic and alternative treatment approach, chiropractic adjustments can reduce stress placed on someone’s immune system, freeing up energy to be used towards disease prevention and maintaining homeostasis. Our family gets full body adjustments twice a week to maintain our care. I have seen chiropractic adjustments lower my children’s fevers, stop excessive crying, help them use the bathroom when backed up, and make an ear ache disappear. If any of us are ever sick, this is the first thing we turn to when starting the healing process. All of my children have been adjusted since birth, I’ve gotten adjusted for 7 years and I’ve seen a dramatic weight difference by doing so, I continue to get adjusted during my pregnancies.
The next thing on our list for treating the flu or any colds or viruses are essential oils. I purchased my essential oil kit right after I had Nolan and really fell head over heels. When I was pregnant with Nolan, any type of fragrance would give me immediate headaches so I could only inhale peppermint oils in short periods. When I became a mom, I realized I needed help sometimes with getting him to sleep so lavender and Gentle Baby blend came to my rescue. Now, I am extremely well versed on oils and use them daily in various ways. During flu season, we always make sure to have Thieves, Purification and Raven essential oil blends diffusing and also in roller ball containers to use as needed and ESPECIALLY when leaving the house. Have you ever seen the movie Contagion? It’s such a great example of how cold and flus spread, in my opinion.
Manuka honey is also another one of those things that’s always in my pantry. My Dad is a beekeeper so I’ve always been a honey girl! Honey on the cob, drizzled over fruit or hot biscuits, honey mixed into salad dressings and meat marinades… you name it, I do it. But did you know much honey could do for your health? When taken internally can be more effective than prescribed antibiotics. and you can even use it externally to treat wounds! That’s so crazy but SO cool. You can read more about Manuka honey here. We also love these lollipops the kids suck on for sweet treats and to deal with coughs.
Have you ever heard of colloidal silver? We introduced this to our holistic medicine cabinet last year when Nolan started kindergarten. He was bringing home every cold known to man and with families the size of mine it always travels through the entire family with me last. Silver smothers and kills 99.9% of all germs and bacteria (another reason why we love cleaning with Norwex). It is antibacterial, helps heal wounds and cuts and also skin funguses because it’s anti-fungal (think ringworm, psoriasis and even burns!), you can also clear up ear infections and Pink eye – you only need one drop per ear/eye, it’s anti-inflammatory and can help reduce swelling – I have heard of pregnant women using it for swollen feet and hands, it works as a nasal spray to control sinus infections and we personally take q-tips and swab the inside of our noses if we ever have sinus issues, but, the best reason to have it on hand is to keep cold and flus away. We ingest one dropper full a day and two dropper fulls if anyone ever gets sick! Colloidal silver is easy to find at healthy food stores or Amazon for the win! I have ours on an Amazon subscription that mails out monthly.
My love for holistic remedies runs deep y’all and I am always researching what I can add into the mix to help strengthen our immune systems. Elderberry syrup is something that I started hearing about two years ago. I purchased a big mason jar premade from a local lady in Myrtle Beach and fell in love. It tastes delicious and the health benefits are unreal! It was almost $50 for that big quart but it lasted us all winter and it proved to be worth every penny. I have actually found a better price point with premade kits from my friend Ashley who owns The Farm Life. She is a wealth of knowledge and I have enjoyed following her social media accounts because they are chalk full of nutritional information. Elderberries are packed full of nutrients like iron, potassium, phosphorus, copper, vitamins A, B and C, and proteins. Not only does it help with heart health, respiratory health, diabetic issues, and bone health, it boosts your immune system enough to fight off colds and the flu! There are certain antibacterial and anti-infectious qualities in elderberry syrup (not juice) that make it very potent and helpful when fighting a cold or flu. We each take a spoonful a day and up that to two spoonfuls when sick.
