Mamas, I cannot stress to you enough the importance of self care. I know all to well what it’s like living at the bottom of the totem pole. It’s not fun but as a Mom we tend to put ourselves last and focus on the rest of our family. This isn’t something that we SHOULD do. I know you’re probably rolling your eyes and thinking “yea, right… how do I practice self care when I feel so worn out at the end of the day?” and that’s what I am here to share. Celebrate small victories. Do things that make you happy and keep you sane. You might not be able to do them all but setting obtainable goals for each day helps tremendously.
Mothers cannot give from a depleted sure. Every mother needs emotional, mental, physical and spiritual validation, nourishment and support. When a mother is respected and well cared for, she, and her whole family will benefit. Wooooo, can I get an amen? This speaks to me on SO many levels because it’s so true. The times where I have my breaking points and burst into tears are the times when I have put myself last and I am feeling the impacts from doing that. Don’t continue the cycle. CHOOSE to do better. CHOOSE to focus on yourself. Even if that is a short time per day, it’s better than nothing. A car can run on fumes for only so long. It needs to be refilled or it will stop running altogether. You need to take time for yourself, to rejuvenate, to make sure you are not lost while trying to hold everything together.
This blog is my way of helping you all realize how important you are and to take the time to take care of yourself. I’m sharing some of the ways I give myself self care, if these don’t feel like ways you would want to treat yourself, please brainstorm ideas for what would and implement them into your daily routine.
-Something that I do a few times a week is have a little at home “spa day!” I whip out my Beautycounter charcoal mask, sugar scrub, epsom salt and take a 20 minute bath. The hubby is more than happy to play with the kids during my bath time so I can refocus. He knows if I ever ask him to watch them while I take a soak that it’s been a long day! I have oily, acne skin and for this reason, I LOVE the charcoal mask. It works wonders on pulling out the gunk of my pores and really deep cleans my skin. You can read more about it here.
-I sit aside an hour at least five days a week to get to the gym. Ya’ll, I have always gone on walks and tried to work out alone but joining a local gym that offers exercise classes has been the best decision I could have made for my health journey. It has really changed my focus on being stronger and in the process it really clears my head. I love how motivating it has been to work out alongside really inspiring strong women but do it at my own pace. Everything about that one hour a day is a breath of fresh air. I push my body more than ever and the feeling when I walk out of that gym is the best!
-I have begun writing out my calendar and actually using my planner. Yea, I’ve always purchased planners but keeping up with them has been unsuccessful. Now that I have a really busy schedule, it’s the driving force in my sanity. I used to write REALLY long “to-do” lists and feel so upset at the end of the day when I didn’t accomplish 1/3 of what was on it. I’ve learned to not set such unrealistic goals and focus on what I can do. I know that four focused tasks a day for my business is more beneficial than running around like a chicken with its head cut off. So, I’ve started doing that. And. It’s. So. Helpful!!!!!!!!! I write out my monthly calendar with family things in red because they are non negotiable and then fill in work and social events after. Total game changer for how focused and less stressed out I have been.
-The “Girl, Wash Your Face” podcast has become a daily favorite of mine. When I get the kids to sleep at night I put in a headphone and listen quietly until Scarlet Reese nods off. It’s the perfect way to stay awake, mindful and thankful during the craziest part of my day. There are so many podcasts out there, that I know you can find one you will like and can listen to during bedtime.
-Oils, oils, oils. I SWEAR my the use of essential oils. Ya’ll, I couldn’t go a day without them. I have diffusers in every room and normally diffuse something calming (lately, it’s been all about fall blends) and I apply my roller ball blends as needed. I keep two specific ones with me at all times. The Jasmine roller ball and the Stress Away roller ball. Those two are magical and really help keep my mind and body at peace. If you’ve never used oils, please read this post to learn more.
-Netflix and chill. Wait… it’s not what you’re thinking! hahahaa. But Seriously, the hubby and I love getting into a new tv show and Netflix at the end of a long day is our fav. We just finished Bloodline and are looking for ideas on a new show to watch. We also watch all the Bravo reality tv that’s on during fall and Below Deck has been a great comical relief!
